FAQ for Summer 2020 participants

By Somerville Youth Soccer 07/10/2020, 8:00am EDT

You're registered for our Summer program. Now what?

A big thank-you to families and coaches for the great registration response to our Summer 2020 program. We understand you are likely to have questions, considering you've never done anything like this before. Well, neither have we, and we're continuing to put this together as we go.

If you do have any questions, please read the following to see if it answers them:

Q: How do I find out my child's training group/coach/schedule?

A: Make sure you have our SportsEngine mobile app installed. Once you're logged in, you should see your child(ren)'s summer group(s) listed under Teams. You can see the coaching staff and communicate with the entire team via the Chat function or privately with one or more coaches using the Messages function.

Q: What if I don't see anything listed in the Schedule in the mobile app?

A: As training sessions are scheduled, they are added to our SportsEngine calendar. If you don't see any training sessions listed yet for a particular group, this means we're still scheduling that group's sessions. We're juggling coaches' schedules and shifting fields access, and it's a very complicated and evolving puzzle. We hope to have a finished summer training session schedule by the end of Wednesday, July 8.

Q: What if my child(ren)'s group's training schedule doesn't work for my family?

A: Please let the group's coach know and they will contact their Age Coordinator to see what, if anything, can be done.

Q: Can I request a specific teammate or coach for my child?

A: Unfortunately, given the extraordinary challenge of doing this administrative planning on incredibly short notice, our volunteers aren't able to accommodate teammate or coach requests. That's just one wrinkle too many for us to handle.

Q: When do these training sessions start?

A: This will depend on the field being used by the group. Some of our fields were available starting yesterday and a few groups were able to hold their first sessions last night. We just received a major surprise this afternoon with the news that the grass at Lincoln Park still is not able to support usage this summer, after we had scheduled sessions there. So we are scrambling to find alternative fields for those groups. We have requested hours at Dilboy Stadium and were told those won't begin until Monday, July 13.

Q: What should my child(ren) bring to their training sessions?

A: Every child will need their own:

- ball (coaches will distribute a ball to any child who needs one at their first training session)

- shin guards

- face covering

- hand sanitizer

- FILLED water bottle (drinking fountains at fields are NOT operational)

- both a light shirt and a dark shirt (in lieu of bibs/pinnies)*

* once scrimmaging is allowed

Q: What can my child(ren) expect at these training sessions?

A: With yesterday's announcement of the youth sports guidance for Phase III, Step 1, soccer scrimmages in Massachusetts will need to wait until at least July 27. Therefore, our training sessions will consist of conditioning, individual skills work, and non-contact group drills. Our coaches will look to make these sessions fun and engaging for the kids. Face coverings are required for players only when they are unable to maintain social distancing.

Q: How long will training sessions last?

A: Most sessions will be 60 minutes, but some will be 75 or 90 minutes. Please check the group's schedule in the SportsEngine mobile app for the exact duration of a training session.

Q: What should I do during my child(ren)'s training sessions?

A: One (1) adult or youth chaperone per player is allowed to remain at training sessions as a spectator. All spectators must wear face coverings and maintain proper physical distancing. Family COVID Coordinators will be on hand at fields to ensure spectator compliance.

Q: What about uniforms?

A: No competitive games will be played during this summer program, therefore no uniforms are required. You child(ren) should wear whatever athletic clothing they would like to team events.

Q: What about families returning from traveling out of state?

A: Players and coaches who are returning from outside New England (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) should wait 14 days after returning to Massachusetts or have a negative COVID-19 test result from a test at least three days after returning home before participating in soccer activities.
