Statement from Somerville Youth Soccer

By Somerville Youth Soccer 06/11/2020, 3:30pm EDT

As a non-profit serving the youth of a diverse city with a significant immigrant population, Somerville Youth Soccer affirms our commitment as an organization to anti-racism and stands as one with our Board Members, Coaches, Players, and Families of Color.

So we state loudly and unequivocally that BLACK LIVES MATTER. All lives will matter only when Black Lives Matter.

Simply being non-discriminatory and inclusive isn't enough. We must be anti-racist. Racism is a public health crisis and we need to be talking about it, identifying it in its many forms, and working to root it out.

Statements of support are great, but these times demand action. Here's what Somerville Youth Soccer will be doing as an organization to actively combat racism:

1. Consulting anti-racism experts and best practices to ensure that our policies properly reflect our organization's anti-racism values and goals.

2. Reaching out to our membership -- both current and former -- about their experiences with racism in soccer to determine the scope of the problem and where racism is most prevalent.

3. Bringing our grievances over racial issues involving other towns and travel referees to our travel league (Middlesex Youth Soccer League) to demand action at the league and town level.

4. Giving our directors, coaches, players, and families an anti-racism toolkit, so they know how to respond and feel empowered to respond when encountering racism.

5. Gathering and annually publishing demographic data on our organization, including our board of directors, coaches, and players, in order to quantify and statistically track inclusivity and representation.

We will continue to search for and identify additional ways to fight racism and we welcome your thoughts and suggestions.

In solidarity,

Somerville Youth Soccer

Virtual Annual Meeting is May 20

By Somerville Youth Soccer 05/19/2020, 8:15pm EDT

Somerville Youth Soccer's 2020 Annual Meeting will be conducted virtually via Zoom

Please join us (virtually) for Somerville Youth Soccer’s 2020 Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 20 at 7 PM.

Due to the current pandemic, the meeting will take place via Zoom. Information for accessing this Zoom meeting has been emailed out to Somerville Youth Soccer members.

These Annual Meetings are extremely important events, and this one has gained even more importance. There will be an update to our membership on where we’re at in these uncertain times, an election of our 2020/21 board, a big-picture conversation about the direction of our organization, and a discussion of proposed changes.

Getting parents and community members to step up and take on coaching and administrative roles is vital to our survival as a completely volunteer-run organization. No matter what your skill set or soccer knowledge, there is a role for you. If you’re concerned about the time commitment, some of these roles require very few hours per season.

The following positions currently have no nominations for the 2020/21 club year (click for position descriptions):

Vice President*
Registrar*
Player Development Director*
MYSL Town Representative
Toddler Program Director
Volunteer Director
Sponsorship Director
Events Director

* Executive Committee position

All board positions are being elected and nominations for any position can be made prior to the meeting or at the meeting.

Spring 2020 season canceled

By Somerville Youth Soccer 04/21/2020, 1:45pm EDT

Refunds of Spring 2020 registration fees available upon request

In light of the governor's recent announcement of the continuation of the measures in place in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Somerville Youth Soccer's Spring 2020 season officially is canceled.

While this development comes as a massive disappointment to everyone involved with Somerville Youth Soccer, the Board of Directors fully supports this decision. Somerville Youth Soccer's board has been working aggressively to reduce spring season costs for some time now, in order to minimize the financial impact on the organization. And there is a rainy day fund in place for exactly these sorts of scenarios, allowing Somerville Youth Soccer to issue full refunds to any families who request one.

Families who are able to support Somerville Youth Soccer at this time, are asked to please consider making their Spring 2020 registration fee(s) a tax-deductible charitable donation to our organization. Doing so will afford some financial stability in these uncertain times, and enable Somerville Youth Soccer to continue outreach efforts to make soccer accessible to all within the community who want to play.

However, Somerville Youth Soccer understands this crisis is hitting many families' finances extremely hard. Families who would like a refund of their Spring 2020 registration fee(s) can click here to request one.

Rest assured that Somerville Youth Soccer is working diligently to ensure that we have programming available as soon as it's safe for kids to return to the soccer fields. In the meantime, please make sure you're following us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram for updates and challenges for kids.
