Somerville Youth Soccer has very popular 2T and 3T Toddler programs for two- and three-year-olds, respectively. Toddler soccer consists of a weekly “practice” session, with parents occasionally taking part alongside coaches and their children. The goal at this age is really just helping youngsters become familiar with the game, the ball, and soccer vocabulary/concepts, while keeping them engaged and entertained. Practices are non-competitive, with the focus always on fun and introducing elementary skills.
Q: Are there teams?
A: We divide kids into “teams” only to help facilitate scheduling and practices.
Q: How long are practices?
A: Toddler practices usually run 45 minutes to an hour, depending on attention span, weather, and occasionally, patience J.
Q: Some days will not work for our family schedule. Can we request a certain practice schedule?
A: Yes. During the registration process, you will be asked to specify your first three choices of practice times (generally either Wednesday afternoon or Saturday mornings) – which we do our best to honor. (Please remember that we are always working within the limits of our league schedule and the availability of grass fields within the City.)
Q: Can I drop off my child for practices?
A: No. Either a parent, relative, or caregiver needs to be on-site for the entirety of the practice.
Q: Are there games?
A: No. No actual soccer games are played; just the one weekly practice.
Q: What is the minimum age to start Toddler soccer?
A: You can register any child for 2T soccer who will turn two before the start of the season for which you are registering.
Q: What equipment will my child need?
A: At this age, players do not need shin guards or a uniform. Cleats and a (size 3) soccer ball are recommended. Coaches will bring additional soccer balls and portable nets. Please bring water for your child though.
Q: What is the difference between Toddler soccer and Pre-K/K?
A: Pre-K soccer is for four-year-olds in their final year of pre-K, and consists of a single weekday practice each week, as well as a Saturday morning game against one of the other Somerville Pre-K teams. (K is a similar program for five-year-olds currently enrolled in kindergarten.)
