Somerville Youth Soccer officially launched the Somerville Tom Heinz Grassroots Referee Program (GRP) on Saturday, May 3rd, as youth referees began their training by officiating Boys Grade 1 In-Town games at East Somerville.

The Tom Heinz GRP has nine members this year who are going through training, and they will be observed on a weekly basis by SYS Coordinator of Officials John Sanders and Tom Heinz GRP mentor Penny Maciejka.

SYS has run an informal version of this program, and it has proven highly successful. Eight referees begin their journey through this program and have gone on to achieve significant milestones. Last year, three of our referees were selected to officiate at the Middlesex Youth Soccer League Commissioners' Cup, with one advancing to the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions (MTOC) and refereeing the U12 Boys Division 1 Semi-Final. That referee was also considered for the Best Young Referee award. Prior to 2024, two others were selected for Commissioners' Cup, with one making it to MTOC.

This strong track record in developing and supporting young referees is what drives our continued commitment to the GRP, which is named in honor of the late Tom Heinz, a longtime referee in Somerville and surrounding towns who dedicated his life to the youth of the region.

“As referee shortages continue across the youth sports landscape both regionally and nationally, we are extremely pleased that the Tom Heinz GRP is helping to introduce a new generation to a crucial element of our sport,” Sanders said. “The formalization of this program is an important step to ensuing that players and coaches will be able to continue playing the game they love in a structured and supervised forum, and I’m proud that Somerville is helping lead the way.”

Upon completion of the program, referees will be well-prepared to pursue USSF Grassroots Referee (Black Badge) certification. Referees who are age 14 and older are eligible to sit for the certification exam, and the goal is to ensure that all participants who are age 14 and up are ready to earn their badge this summer, preparing them to referee U10 matches or serve as Assistant Referees for U12 and U14 matches this fall.

Somerville Youth Soccer lanzó oficialmente el Programa de Árbitros de Base Tom Heinz de Somerville (GRP) el sábado 3 de mayo, cuando los árbitros juveniles comenzaron su entrenamiento oficiando juegos masculinos de Grado 1 en la ciudad en East Somerville.

El GRP de Tom Heinz tiene nueve miembros este año que están recibiendo capacitación, y serán observados semanalmente por el Coordinador de Oficiales de SYS, John Sanders,  y la mentora del GRP de Tom Heinz, Penny Maciejka.

SYS ha llevado a cabo una versión informal de este programa, y ha demostrado ser muy exitoso. Ocho árbitros comienzan su viaje a través de este programa y han logrado hitos significativos. El año pasado, tres de nuestros árbitros fueron seleccionados para oficiar en la Copa de Comisionados de la Liga de Fútbol Juvenil de Middlesex, y uno avanzó al Torneo de Campeones de Massachusetts (MTOC) y arbitró la semifinal de la División 1 masculina sub-12. Ese árbitro también fue considerado para el premio al Mejor Árbitro Joven. Antes de 2024, otros dos fueron seleccionados para la Copa de Comisionados, y uno llegó al MTOC.

Esta sólida trayectoria en el desarrollo y apoyo a los árbitros jóvenes es lo que impulsa nuestro compromiso continuo con el GRP, que lleva el nombre del difunto Tom Heinz, un árbitro de larga data en Somerville y las ciudades circundantes que dedicó su vida a la juventud de la región.

Al finalizar el programa, los árbitros estarán bien preparados para obtener la certificación de Árbitro de Base de la USSF (Insignia Negra). Los árbitros mayores de 14 años son elegibles para presentarse al examen de certificación, y el objetivo es garantizar que todos los participantes mayores de 14 años estén listos para obtener su insignia este verano, preparándolos para arbitrar partidos sub-10 o servir como árbitros asistentes para partidos sub-12 y sub-14 este otoño.
