Somerville Youth Soccer was honored to welcome former United States Men’s National Team and New England Revolution star Taylor Twellman for a three-day clinic in late August that took place at Conway Field.

A total of 60 players entering grades 1-8 joined Twellman and his father Tim for the clinic, which featured individual skill instruction mixed with fun and games.  Members of both the Somerville High School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, along with several SYS coaches, assisted the Twellmans as part of the clinic, which also included a visit from New England Revolution mascot Slyde and members of the Revs’ staff.  The event concluded with a coaches’ clinic conducted for SYS volunteers by the Twellmans.

“We are incredibly grateful as an organization to have Taylor and Tim provide world-class instruction to our players and coaches,” SYS President Dominic Lachowicz said of the clinic.  “This was a tremendous opportunity for everyone to end the summer and begin the fall season on high notes, and we look forward to hosting similar events for our families in the future.”

Taylor Twellman, who played for the Revolution from 2002 through 2009, scored more goals than any other player in Major League Soccer over that time span.  A five-time MLS all-star and 2005 league Most Valuable Player, he still ranks as the team’s all-time leading scorer.  Taylor recorded 30 caps for the United States national team and scored six goals in international competition, and following his retirement, he has served as a commentator for ESPN and ABC before recently assuming similar duties on MLS broadcasts for Apple TV.
