Somerville Youth Soccer proudly hosted its second annual Won World Soccer Camp once again in mid-August at Capuano Field, as the sold-out event for players in grades 1-4 combined soccer skill development with the opportunity for immersion of different language, geographical and cultural concepts that promote a diverse experience for underrepresented youth in the Somerville community.

Under the guidance of camp director and longtime Bunker Hill Community College head men’s soccer coach Scott Benjamin, the SYS Won World Camp brought together collegiate and high school players who provided a fun atmosphere that included games, drills and other activities centered around soccer that also opened doors to learn more about cultures around the globe.  Activities included basic language skills, storytelling, drawing and learning about other countries and culminated with a World Cup style tournament as well as the creation of camp banners that symbolized different cultures.

“It’s nice to give back to and celebrate our diverse community,” Benjamin, who has served as an SYS travel coach for the past three years, said of the event.  “The kids love the soccer aspect, but to see them also have fun with the culture and learning aspects is so rewarding.  The enthusiasm that the players and coaches brought every day is a testament to their willingness to learn and grow both in an athletic and academic sense.”

Won World Camp welcomed 50-plus players once again this summer, and despite rain hampering two of the sessions during the week, the event continues to bring the SYS community together.

“We are extremely grateful to Coach Benjamin and all of our youth coaches for helping to make a difference in the lives of so many in our community,” SYS President Dominic Lachowicz said.  “This is quickly becoming a staple of our organization’s calendar, and we are already looking forward to next year’s camp.”
