Somerville Youth Soccer joins the entire youth soccer community in mourning the passing of Tom Heinz, who served as the organization’s Director of Officiating and was a fixture in the Middlesex Youth Soccer League.  Tom passed away unexpectedly over the weekend doing what he loved best—teaching others about our beautiful game.

Tom’s commitment to the youth of our community was only one of the qualities that made him such a special person.  His calm and affable demeanor provided a shining example to players, coaches, and fellow officials alike.  He was a friend to everyone he encountered, and his impact both professionally and personally will continue to resonate with all of us in SYS.

Tom played a major role in helping to shape the role that officials play in growing the game of soccer.  He was involved in efforts to identify individuals who wanted to remain involved in the sport in some way, and those grassroots efforts are evident in the number of young officials who have committed their time in support of youth soccer organizations across the region.

Tom’s legacy of service as a teacher and mentor will endure, and he will always be remembered as a great friend of SYS.

A memorial service for Tom will take place on Friday, September 10th at the Breslin Funeral Home in Malden, followed by a celebration of his life at the Medford Elks Lodge.
