Openings with all ages, genders, and skill levels

Do you or someone you know have experience as a soccer player or coach and want to stay involved with soccer by teaching the next generation?

Somerville Youth Soccer can use your help.

The time commitment doesn't have to be great. Just a few hours a week from April to June for one or two weeknight practices and a Saturday game.

We need coaches and assistant coaches for the spring season for teams of all ages, genders, and skill levels.

These are the descriptions for the different coaching roles:

In-Town (Pre-K to Grade 2) Head Coach
Plan, set up, and run one weeknight practice each week. Know the terminology, rules, and basic strategy of the game and teach this to their team. In charge during Saturday games. Punctual and responsible. Makes sure to communicate regularly with the team using our mobile app or desktop app.

Time commitment: 3 to 4 hours per week during the season. No time commitment outside the season.

In-Town (Pre-K to Grade 2) Assistant Coach
Help the head coach with practice planning, setup, and execution and often manage substitutions during games. Help instruct players during practices and fill in for the head coach when necessary, so a basic knowledge of the game is important. Punctual and responsible. Help out with team communication.

Time commitment: 2 to 3 hours per week during the season. No time commitment outside the season.

Travel (Grades 3+) Head Coach
Plan, set up, and run two weeknight practice each week. Have a strong knowledge of the game and tactics and be able to teach these to children. Punctual and responsible for credentials, rosters, and player cards at Saturday games. Communicates regularly with the team using our mobile or desktop apps.

Time commitment: 5 to 6 hours per week during the season and 2 to 3 hours per week during optional preseason practices. No offseason time commitment.

Travel (Grades 3+) Assistant Coach
Help the head coach with practice planning, setup, and execution and often manage substitutions during games. Help instruct players during practices and fill in for the head coach when necessary. Strong knowledge of the game is important. Punctual and responsible. Help out with team communication.

Time commitment: 3 to 5 hours per week during the season and 1 to 2 hours per week during optional preseason practices. No offseason time commitment.

All SYSL volunteers are required to undergo background checks through Mass Youth Soccer and must complete online abuse prevention and concussion training courses. Spanish or Portuguese proficiency is very helpful but not required for communications purposes.
