Nominations needed by May 22 Annual Meeting

Next Wednesday, May 22, is Somerville Youth Soccer League's 2019 Annual Meeting at 7 PM at the George Dilboy VFW Post in Davis Square. There are vital positions currently without any candidates, and volunteers urgently are needed.

SYSL is an entirely volunteer-run organization and depends on new volunteers continually stepping forward and filling vacant roles.

Here are the positions in need of nominees for 2019/20 ahead of Wednesday's meeting:

Grade 1/2 (U7/U8) Age Director
The Grade 1/2 Age Director is the main administrator for our In-Town Grades 1 & 2 (formerly U7/U8) program. Working with the Registrar, they determine the number of Boys and Girls Grade 1 & 2 teams to field, form team rosters by parent request and practice availability, recruit coaches and organize coaching staffs, and communicate with the coaches, parents, and the public about the program. Good organization and communication skills are a must, and Spanish proficiency would be a huge plus.

Time commitment: Varies by time of year, approximately 15-20 project hours of planning work each February and July, then typically 4-6 hours per week in March and April and August and September, then 1-3 hours per week during May, early June, October, and early November, with virtually no time commitment in the other months other than attending monthly SYSL board meetings.

Pre-K/K (U5/U6) Age Director
The Pre-K/K Age Director is the main administrator for our In-Town Pre-K/K (formerly U5/U6) program. Working with the Registrar, they determine the number of Pre-K and K teams to field, form team rosters by parent request and practice availability, recruit coaches and organize coaching staffs, and communicate with the coaches, parents, and the public about the program.

Toddler (2T/3T) Age Director
The Toddler Age Director is the main administrator for our vital Toddler program. Working with the Registrar, they form Toddler team rosters by age and by session preferences, recruit coaches and organize coaching staffs, and communicate with the coaches, parents, and the public about the program. Good organization and communication skills are a must, and Spanish proficiency would be a huge plus.

Time commitment: Varies by time of year, approximately 10-15 project hours of planning work each February and July, then typically 2-5 hours per week in March and April and August and September, then 1 hour per week during May, early June, October, and early November, with virtually no time commitment in the other months other than attending monthly SYSL board meetings.

Uniform Director
All players Pre-K (U5) and older require uniforms, and the Uniform Director is the coordinator for uniforms in our league. While families other than Sliding-Scale Fee registrants are responsible to go on-line to place their uniform orders, the Uniform Director conveys uniform information to registrants, answers questions about uniforms, assigns and tracks jersey numbers, and helps order, stock inventory, and distribute uniforms to Sliding-Scale Fee registrants. They are also occasionally called on to help resolve uniform issues during the season. Good organization and communication skills are a must, as well as having physical space at home to store uniforms and an accessible outdoor area for families to pick up uniforms. Spanish proficiency is helpful but not necessary.

Time commitment: Varies by time of year, with 8-10 hours of planning required each February and July, then 1-3 hours a week during March, April, August, and September, then generally less than an hour per week during the remainder of the season, other than attending monthly SYSL board meetings.

Volunteer Director
The Volunteer Director recruits volunteers for the league and ensures that volunteers are connected with the appropriate director to utilize their talents appropriately. Spanish or Portuguese proficiency is a plus.

Time commitment: Varies by time of year, with approximately 2-5 hours of extra work each March and August, then around an hour of work every month in addition to attending the monthly SYSL board meetings.

Sponsorship Director
The Sponsorship Director identifies and facilitates deals with potential SYSL sponsors and maintains relationships with existing sponsors. Good communication and negotiation skills are essential and proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is a plus.

Time commitment: Averages 1 to 3 hours per month, depending on sponsorship activity, in addition to attending monthly SYSL board meetings.

Note: All SYSL volunteers are required to complete background checks and abuse prevention training through Mass Youth Soccer.
